this was a very slow read for me but i ended up really enjoying it. the whole thing felt like watching an episode of “the twilight zone”. you’re not sure what’s real, what’s imagined. the book is told from third person POV. we follow the lives of naomi & laura- two women who meet at a department when they accidentally swap coats and then continue to bump into each other until a friendship is formed. we also follow the life of a ghostwriter’s unnamed assistant- a woman who listens to cassette tapes telling the stories of various women, transcribing the stories and delivering the transcriptions to the ghostwriter once she’s finished. naomi becomes obsessed with laura, and then vice versa, to the point where laura chops her hair off to look more like naomi, and shows up in place of her at work. its descent into madness on all ends. the story is eerie and you’re left questioning reality at the end. despite the slowness, i did really enjoy it. the twist at the end gave me chills, and to me it’s worth the read for that alone.
