Maggie Wise will take your eyes... Malcolm Wise is the baby and "golden child" of the Wise family. He and Violet, his sister-in law, who has been abandoned by older brother Elias, have become his mother Maggie's caretakers in the last days of her life. Maggie Wise has always been labeled as a Witch by their neighbors and made it difficult for her children to feel easy in her company. In the last hours of her life, Maggie reveals that she has been alive a lot longer than anyone realizes. She tasks Malcolm with burying her body in her birthplace by the second sunrise after her heart stops beating or it will all be for nothing... What takes place over the next couple of days is an incredibly tense, fast-paced race against time to beat the sunrise. Malcolm and Violet are being hunted by supernatural beings who will stop at nothing to prevent Maggie from being buried back in her birthplace. Although the ending was somewhat predictable which may be a deterrent for some readers, I was still on the edge of my seat the whole book. This is an excellent blend of toxic family, witches and vampires, grief, and gore. I really enjoyed All Hallows and The Road of Bones by Golden so I had pretty high expectations going in, and I would say those were exceeded for me. The atmosphere and some scenes felt reminiscent of 30 days of night. I would recommend this to readers who enjoy multiple POV's, family drama with their horror, and a deadly road trip.
