3.75/5 ⭐️ oh how i wanted to love this book. i was recommended ‘cleo & frank’ by numerous people who share my reading taste. this book had all the makings of a five star read for me: depressed fmc, toxic love story, manhattan backdrop, drug abuse- but there was just something off. this felt like the book was trying too hard to be *THAT* book. some quotes were good- but they seemed like copy and paste, aspirational internet quotes. i felt like i was on the edge of something great the entire time i was reading. cleo felt flat as a character- i loved the enigma of her and what her personality should feel like- but i just never felt like she really got it. i get what the author was doing, i just don’t know if i loved it. we were supposed to fall out of love with the characters as they fell out of love with each other. but how could i fall out of love when there was nothing to love about them from the start? i see exactly why people love this book and i really wish i loved it more. the first half kind of even dragged for me, but after we hit the 50% mark i needed to know what happened, despite not being obsessed with the story. im sorry to all ‘cleo and frank’ stans, i wish it didn’t have to be like this😭
