3 stars, i didn’t hate this book, but i also didn’t love it. it fell pretty solidly into the “meh” category for me, which was disappointing because i expected to enjoy it a lot more than i did. my biggest issue was that i never really connected to either main character, and by the end i still wasn’t very invested in what happened to them. the world-building and magic system were probably my favorite parts. they felt unique, interesting, and well developed. the writing was good too, though a little poetic and sometimes overly drawn out for my taste. i also struggled with tisaanah’s characterization. she came across very childlike at times while also being written as this super badass character, and that combination just didn’t fully work for me because she never stopped seeming childlike. overall, i liked the messaging in the story, but i don’t see myself continuing the series.
