What readers say
This book is for: girls with mommy issues girls with daddy issues girls who do everything they can to not end up like their mother but turn into the spitting image girls who have been a teenager, longing, bored, experimental, unsure of what to do with themselves It’s so beautifully written, poetic. I’m obsessed with the plot- a modern retelling of the greek myth of Persephone and Demeter. A man, Rolo Picasso, scoops a girl, Cory, up while she’s camp counselor for his kids; he’s rich, he’s old. He takes her to a private island, where she will nanny his kids for the summer, cut off from society, from her mother, no communication to the outside world. $20k promised, more money than she’s ever dreamed of. He works in pharmaceuticals, he’s developing a new drug. She’s 18, she’s stubborn, she’s lost. She takes the drugs all summer, losing track of time, unsure of her place on the island, unsure of her place in Rolo’s eyes. Is it lust? Her mother realizes she’s gone, she’s not coming home. Despite Cory being 18, her mother knows something wrong; she’s looks for her everywhere. She loses her job, she’s shaves her head. She comes across people who have seen her, strange coincidences leading her back to her daughter. The age gap romance between Rolo & Cory, is less of a romance and more like a lust. It lingers there throughout the whole book, at the edge, teasing what could happen. Very Leon the Professional x Lolita. The ending is great. I loved this book. I would read anything else written by this author.
