i actually had to sit in silence after finishing this book to process the absolute fuckery i had just read. the ending of this book completely ruined it. for the first 40% of the book it was sitting at 3.5 stars for me but the ending actually pissed me off so badly that i can’t justify giving this more than 1 star. the pacing felt off and the world building was a tad lacking. this book also needed another round of editing. the amount of grammatical errors was actually insane for a published book (maybe that’s my teacher brain talking but i cannot rate a book highly if it’s filled with errors). not necessarily a spoiler but proceed with caution: the twist made ZERO sense??? nothing in the entire book built up to that plot twist. NOTHING. if you’re going to have a random twist in the last 20 pages of a book, there needs to be some form of foreshadowing throughout the book otherwise you basically have lied to your readers the entire time. this felt like such a cheap twist to make people want to read the next book and i HATE that.
This book started out at a great pace but after a few chapters got pretty slow. It ended up being slow for most of the book and it had me second guessing picking this up to read. I don’t know why I had to spend so long reading about them being on a boat doing nothing. And the random grammatical errors?? The ending is what brought this book from a three to a four star read.
