spellcaster by jaymin eve had *everything* i should’ve loved: dark academia, witch college, enemies to lovers, dangerous magic, and yet… 😬 in reality, this felt like **2012 wattpad fanfiction (**and not in a nostalgic way). the dialogue is extremely cringy, the pacing is awkward, and the worldbuilding is dumped in huge chunks that interrupt the story instead of enhancing it. we’re constantly *told* things rather than shown them. the repetition was exhausting, especially how often the fmc reminds us she’s “not exceptional” and has “no affinity.” add in full character bios every time someone new appears, and the story completely loses its flow. the enemies-to-lovers dynamic is so poorly done, the characters barely interact and apparently hate each other but also the mmc saves her at every turn… lines like *“i got strong shark vibes”* genuinely pulled me out of the book and made me cringe. by the end, i was more annoyed than entertained. this one just wasn’t for me, and i won’t be continuing the series. if you love fast, steamy romantasy with little build up and can overlook clunky writing, you might enjoy it.
