This was my first Sodergren novel, and I didn't know quite what to expect, but I absolutely loved this! Summer of Monsters is a coming of age creature feature that balances monster action but also deep emotional resonance. At it's core, the book is focused on the terrifying creatures in the woods, but it also poses the question of what's worse-the monsters or the darker aspects of human nature? (I'm looking at you, people of Helsbridge) I loved the relationship between Elli and Brian. I have not experienced the loss that Elli had, but I see a lot of my teenage self in her. This was such a great mix of suspense, horror, and emotions. It's not often I shed a tear reading a horror novel, but the nostalgia and the emotional ending pulled hard on my heartstrings. I've heard this story is not as heavy on the body horror as his normal work, so that both terrifies and intrigues me to read more of Sodergren.
