3.5/5 ⭐️ dear starchildren, I’m writing this letter to tell you my thoughts about my most recent read, ‘The Correspondent’ by Virginia Evans. The book is told in letter format, between our protagonist Sybil and various characters in her life. Sybil is an elderly woman nearing the end of her life who is reflecting on the things she has done, the things she has seen, the things she regrets. She writes letters to anyone and everyone- her estranged children, Joan Didion and various other celebrities, the customer service representative at a DNA testing facility, her neighbor Theodore, her lifelong bestfriend Rosalie. Sybil feels that writing letters is the best way for her to express herself. As she writes, time passes and her vision degenerates; leaving her afraid that she will no longer be able to write the letters that have been a part of who she is her whole life. I rated the book a 3.5/5 stars- I enjoyed it, but it was not my most favorite read. I found the story wholesome, but the subject matter a little unrelatable to me. I have never experienced true grief, I am not a mother, Sybil’s experiences did not mirror my own. However, I really loved the format and enjoyed the way that the book ended. My mom also read this book before me, and she rated it 5/5 stars. She loved the bluntness of Sybil’s personality, her sense of humor, the relatability of her character. I’m excited to discuss this book at my upcoming book club meeting. all the best, starchildreadss
