this book was hard to put down, so it was a perfect read to have on hand for back-to-back flights. in the present, sixteen year old lottie becomes legally emancipated from her caregiver, and is handed a packet with the identity of her birth mother and some sheet music. in the past, two students with an incredible musical gift (anna buckley and will pendleton) fight their feelings and fall in love. on the night before their paths are supposed to split, they spend a night together that will change the rest of their lives. anna moves to ireland to complete a musical residency, and will stays in new york to attend julliard and play in the philharmonic. the actions of that one night hit hard, and anna makes (what she believes is) the right choice to preserve both her and will’s career and overall future. she lives with the regret of her decision hanging over her head for the rest of her life- or at least until lottie sets out to find who her birth parents are and answers to her other lifelong questions. we follow the three of them as they learn about themselves and each other and try everything they can to mend their broken family. this book was very rock and roll. anna becomes an indie rockstar, will becomes a hans zimmer fan level composer, lottie ends up with a famous fashion designer as her guardian. the story felt like a mix of “deep cuts” x “before we were strangers” x “daisy jones”. if you like books about music, you will definitely enjoy this one. i think that the writing and prose was a little simple overall, but i still really enjoyed this story and it felt like a quick easy read that i could not get enough of.
