4.5/5 Fictional take on a girl who grows up in California. She wanders about in the lazy summer at the end of the 60s, hanging around her friends older brothers, smoking pot, fighting with her rich mom. She joins a cult, mostly because she’s enamored with one of the girls in it that she meets; black-haired, barefoot Suzanne. This book is heavily reminiscent of Charles Manson’s ranch girls and the Sharon Tate murders, right down to the music label exec target who refused to help Manson get a contract. I loved the style of writing, and the way that the POV switched from both modern adult Evie’s life and musings on her former life at the ranch. I really didn’t enjoy the diss at conspiracy theories (what purpose did they serve?) but I did enjoy how the feeling of longing that comes with girlhood is displayed throughout the novel so clearly. I really enjoyed this book and it was a nice, fresh take on a topic that I usually don’t read about.
