lost girl drifting through the dunes on the east end of long island the week leading up to labor day. after spending the summer becoming too comfortable with the lifestyle of a wealthy, older man (simon)- swimming in the ocean while he works, skimming pills from his bathroom cabinet- alex is kicked to the curb. sadly, she’s made one mistake too many. dropped off on the train platform by his assistant, with vague promises by simon for them to ‘take a break’ alex decides she’s going to stay in the hamptons for the week. she thinks that she can win simon over at his labor day party, she just has to make it until then. she couch surfs with strangers, snaking her way into their milieu, digging through their unlocked cars and wide open bags at the beach. she befriends everyone, acts as if she’s known them forever. everyone is so trusting, who would suspect anything bad from a 22 year old girl with sun kissed skin and a pretty face? alex has nothing going for her- she’s fucked over every person in her life, owes lots of people a lot of money, has a slight addiction to simon’s painkillers, and to top it all off- her phone barely works. she drifts through the days in a hazy stupor, waiting for the next day to come. a man from her past (dom) haunts her throughout, threatening and agitated. she did steal a lot of money from him, but she’s trying to pretend like that never happened. i didn’t love this as much as i loved cline’s ’the girls’ and i was expecting a little more from the ending but i did finish this in less than a day and could not seem to put it down. i was hooked from page one, filled with anxiety and curiosity of what would happen next and where the end of summer hamptons breeze would take her.
