This book was so beautifully written. It reminded me of one of my favorite books, The Time Traveler’s Wife. Addie LaRue is about a girl from France who makes a deal with the darkness for her own freedom on her wedding night. She sells her soul for a lifetime of freedom; but there’s a catch. There’s no end date for her death; her life ends when she’s had enough. And another thing; no one can remember her. She becomes a ghost to her own family, to those she meets in passing. Once someone walks out a door they have no recollection of Addie LaRue. This makes it hard for her to keep a home, keep belongings, have friends or lovers. No one remembers her in the morning, it’s a million introductions to the same person over and over. She travels all over the world, experiencing everything. The darkness, Luc, visits her every so often to see if she’s ready for the deal to be over. She doesn’t want to let him win, so she keeps living as a ghost. One day in the present, she enters a bookstore in NYC where she meets a boy who remembers her the next day. They go on dates and get to know each other. Despite her curse, he continues to remember. I’m not going to spoil anything else but the ending is so so good. I really enjoyed the cultural references throughout; time periods depicted and famous names throughout history who (in this book) apparently made a deal with the devil for their own fame. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy, historical fiction or anyone who appreciates good writing.
