2.5/5 ⭐️ I was gifted an ARC by Del Rey Books and the premise sounded very exciting. However, the book fell a little flat for me and the writing felt very YA. Cannibalism is not usually a trope I enjoy in books, so this could be why, but also the writing style and prose overall just didn’t excite me. Talia and her two kids (Rosie & Sam) come from a family of cannibals- people with a genetic disorder that makes them have ‘the need’ for human meat. Her son Sam has ‘the need’ but her daughter Rosie doesn’t. This is a good thing in Talia’s eyes but a bad thing overall for the family legacy. There aren’t many people with ‘the need’ in the world and those who have it usually view themselves as a superior, apex predator. Talia and her two kids view it as a curse- they’re constantly on the run from their lives, changing their names, not getting close to anyone and hiding who they really are. If you are looking for a horror read that’s quick and easy, then you would probably enjoy this.
