I actually hated this book so much that I used it as a towel at the pool. That’s how much I didn’t like this book. I gave it water damage ON PURPOSE. Unfortunately, it is the only book that I have with me at the moment and I’d rather read something I hate than be bored for hours on end or scrolling on my phone. We have a Princess Diana impersonator living on the Las Vegas strip, Crissy. We also have a male author trying to portray a bulimic woman (Crissy)- and doing so poorly. Honestly, it felt like he was trivializing eating disorders and just didn’t understand them (probably because he doesn’t) and just decided to use it as a character trope for his book. I also HATE when books are so overly political. Honestly the plot could have been good on its own. Two sisters, one moved to Vegas to follow her new Crypto boyfriend, accidentally gets involved with the mob, puts her family in danger. It COULD have been good- if Bohjalian didn’t word vomit all of his political beliefs into one book for no reason at all. It’s like he wanted an excuse to scream about his stance on everything; when no one asked. The book also takes place in 2022- post Covid era. So it’s EXTREMELY political- touching on covid fear and other stupid shit that I really just don’t want to read about. I’m reading a book to escape from reality, if I wanted to read something political I would. Don’t market this book as a thriller when there’s nothing thrilling about. The ending was so predictable, and all of the characters fit into their little stereotypical box that the author checked off.
