This book has been on my TBR for so long and I finally had an excuse to read it for a book club that I’m in. It was… interesting… This is my second book by this author, and although it was definitely better than the first, I’m realizing that perhaps I’m just not a huge Grady Hendrix fan? I’m not really a horror reader, so maybe that’s part of the reason why his books just don’t do it for me. James Harris moves into a tight-knit Southern community filled with housewives who bake casseroles, husbands who cheat on (and control) their wives, and monthly book clubs. Once he shows up in town, things start to get weird, especially for Southern housewife Patricia. She’s attacked by an old lady from the neighborhood who bites (and swallows) her ear off while she’s taking out the trash, marsh rats swarm her house and kill her mother in law, and children in the ‘bad part of town’ keep going missing and killing themselves. Patricia knows James Harris is tied into all of this, and she’s set out to prove it. But no one in town takes her seriously until it’s too late. Also- the men in this book are so fucking annoying and problematic (which I get is the point) but holy shit. They are the WORST!!! All in all, this was a very gory, descriptive horror novel that was a fitting read just in time for Halloween. I probably wouldn’t recommend to those with a weak stomach, though.
