i wanted to love this one because the premise, setting, and atmosphere were all so intriguing and this book is very highly rated!! but unfortunately the execution fell flat for me. the constant POV switches gave me whiplash, especially in audio format. between the timeline jumps, flashbacks, and changing perspectives, there were multiple times where i felt confused and disconnected from what was happening. it also felt incredibly drawn out and slow, like it was constantly building toward something bigger… and then just never really got there. that being said, the writing itself was beautiful. the isolated, cold, haunting setting was by far my favorite part of the book. the author did an amazing job making the atmosphere feel immersive and unsettling, and i could really feel that loneliness throughout the story. the characters and overall concept were interesting too, which honestly made it more disappointing that it never fully came together for me. i also struggled to figure out what this book was actually trying to be. mystery? thriller? speculative fiction? romance? i don’t mind genre blending, but this felt like it was trying to do too many things at once, which made the story feel disjointed. overall, there were definitely elements i appreciated, but the pacing, structure, and lack of payoff kept me from really connecting with it.
